A story of how I tried to free my smartphone from Google tracking by blocking their servers via hosts and iptables.

The problem with Google services#

A while ago I was gutting one of my Android smartphones (Philips Xenium W6610) and noticed that even with all Google services fully removed, Google does not let the smartphone go free — the phone kept a connection to several Google servers (Germany, the States) plus, as a bonus, 2 Chinese servers (their owners could not be identified).

Solving the problem#

I solved the problem by banning domains via /system/etc/hosts (pointing the domains to 127.0.0.1) + banning requests by IP with iptables.

While banning, I noticed switching to backup servers.
